Never a Dull Moment

Can I say again how  much we are enjoying Friday Harbor?

We love our location in the marina.  We are on the breakwater, just off the main dock, so when visitors come walk the dock, most of them come past Viking Star.  Yesterday Joe and his dog stopped to chat.  Joe also has an older wooden boat that he has across the way at Westsound on Orcas Island.  AND he tells us, he used to keep it in the very spot we are in!  HE is the one who pulled out the morning of November 1, allowing us to take this wonderful spot. (Al had been watching him for several weeks on the Web Cam)

There is always a lot to see here.  The ferries, the birds, the seals, the SUNRISES!  We have a front row seat for those.  And God put on a wonderful show this morning!

Back to the seals......I love the seals.  I don't know exactly why, but I think it has something to do with their absolutely huge eyes.  We have been here a week and a half now, and we are noticing 'regular occurrences'.  There is what I call 'The Gang'.  This is a group of 4-8 seals, seen further outside the breakwater in the mornings.  The seagulls always get excited when they come around, because if the seals are feeding, tidbits float, and the seagulls do the gleaning.  Sometimes they look like they are teasing each other, with seagulls stomping on seal heads, and seals popping up at the gulls.

Al and I have become like the dog in the movie 'Up', only we distract each other with the cry 'Seal!' when we spot one, rather than 'Squirrel!'

We have also observed seals on the INSIDE of the breakwater, one seems smaller than others and we call it the baby.

There is a seal statue in the park above the marina, and I have been disturbed that it only had one shiny eye.  But we have discovered that it is a tribute to Popeye, a seal who has been frequenting the Friday Harbor fuel dock and fish market for more than 15 years.  Here is a wonderful video, which also features a cat, another of our favorite animals.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vT6zCSyL-c

Bored? Just look out the window!
